Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Bill was shot in the neck and permanently paralyzed as a seventeen-year-old in 1989. From there, he set out on a path of endurance and perseverance. He earned a BA and MS in journalism from the University of Illinois. He was a three-time member of Team USA wheelchair rugby, winning gold in the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, the 1998 World Championships in Toronto, and the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.
