J. Ellen Gainor is Professor of Theatre, Film, and Dance and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Cornell University. She is the author of Shaw's Daughters: Dramatic and Narrative Constructions of Gender (1992) and Susan Glaspell in Context: American Theater, Culture, and Politics, 1915-48 (2003). She has edited the volumes Imperialism and Theatre (1995) and Performing America: Cultural Nationalism in American Theater (2001) and is currently editing The Complete Plays of Susan Glaspell. She has written extensively on British and American drama of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and
