Harry W. Baehr Jr. was born in Brooklyn, NY and received his primary and secondary education in the public schools of New York City. In 1925 he entered Dartmouth College, obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1925. In that same year he began graduate study in American history at Columbia University, receiving his Master of Arts degree in 1930.
