In the 1950s, Gerry moved to Portland, OR, where he worked as a reporter for the Oregonian newspaper. While working there, he covered the Irish Troubles extensively. He has traveled many times to Japan and Ireland on assignment. His career as a reporter also took him to the Soviet Union, to Vietnam for two tours, and to Israel where he covered the 1967 Israeli war.
