Thea Pitman was awarded her Ph.D. from University College London in 1999 for a thesis on the tradition of Mexican travel writing, out of which this volume has gradually evolved. She has also published a number of articles on the subject. Current research projects include the study of Latin American cyber-literature and cyberculture, as well as issues of comparative postcolonial experiences, with a particular focus on the relations between Africa and the Americas. She teaches Latin American Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Leeds.
