While growing up, Hudson Phillips traveled extensively as the eldest son of a military family. At the age of eight, he experienced a wartime evacuation from the Panama Canal Zone at the outbreak of WWII. He attended high school in Heidelberg, Germany, during the post-war period of occupation.
