Useni Eugene Perkins is nationally recognized for his writings that focus on youth and youth issues. Historian and writer Lerone Bennett, Jr. cited Perkins' book Home Is a Dirty Street: The Social Oppressions of Black Children as one of the most important books on the sociology of the streets since the publication of Black Metropolis.
