Barbara Paulding was born in Hamilton, Iowa in "The Little Black House," a coalminer's shack covered in tarpaper. Her early life was spent in many different small, southern Iowa towns. Whenever she could, she spent time on her relative's farms, loving the peace and freedom of being in the country. When her mother's parents finally realized their dream of having their own land, Barbara's happiest childhood memories revolved around that little hard scrabble farm.
