JAMES PANTON is lecturer in politics at St John s College, University of Oxford. He is co-founder of The Manifesto Club (www.manifestoclub.com), an organisation launched in January 2006 to develop an enlightened, free-spirited and humanist alternative to the political malaise in contemporary society.
