James Walter Orr was born on a ranch northeast of Amarillo, Texas. He was the second of eight children, consisting of five sons and three daughters. He was the oldest son. The ranch he grew up on was in an isolated location and could not be entered in wet weather because of the muddy country roads, or in some snowy weather because of being snow-bound.
