Born in South Devon, educated at The Oratory School, and at Hertford College, Oxford, Martin lasted five days as a graduate trainee with an American investment bank before leaving the City to pursue a career as a writer and journalist. After the usual raft of would-be writer's jobs (short-order griddle-chef, waiter, cocktail barman, removals and demolition man), Martin joined Conde Nast Publications as a copy-sub and later became Travel Editor at British Vogue, a position he held for a number of years.
