Sheila Maureen Farrell was born in Pasadena, California on August 26, 1933. She attended public schools in Pasadena, graduating from Pasadena City College in 1951. She started her working life at age 19 at Citizens National Bank in Los Angeles and then went into the field of medicine where she was secretary to the Chief of Medicine at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. She later returned to banking and spent 26 years at Union Bank in both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
