Andrew was born in 1946 in Birmingham. He was educated at St. Augustine's Catholic Primary school and transferred to St Philip's Catholic Grammar School at age 11, leaving aged 18. Subsequently, he trained as a teacher at Loughborough Teacher Training College from 1964-67. He has been involved in Catholic education for over forty years, twenty-five of them teaching in secondary schools.
