Phyllis H. Moore lived most of her life in the Susquehanna River Valley. She developed an early love of animals on the family farm. This is reflected in her writing as the characters she depicts interact with horses, dogs, and other animals. As Relocation Specialist to move families and businesses to make way for a dike-levee project built to prevent flooding of the Susquehanna River, she used this area as the setting for her first book, Maxi's Choice and the sequel Hummingbird Hill.
