American flying ace who flew for the Royal Flying Corp in World War I before the United States entered the war. Shot down from 8,000 feet, he was capture by the Germans and escaped by jumping from a moving prison train. He walked seventy-two days through Western Europe to Holland and freedom. He was a national hero and the top speaker in 1918. He ended his career in Hollywood as a silent film star and was found dead with a bullet to his head the Hamilton Hotel in Los Angeles at age thirty.
