Lear was born in Demopolis, AL. She is the tenth child of 12 born to the parents of Mr. and Mrs. Eliza Lynch. At the age of five she lost her mother (Sadie Bell Lynch) and later moved to Detroit, MI where she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle Mr. and Mrs. Herman Christian where she resided until she moved to New York.
