Born in New Zealand, John has followed a career in science. Since gaining a PhD in Madison, Wisconsin, he has worked in New Zealand, France, Spain and Australia and, for some years, was based at a small research station in the Bay of Islands, in the northern-most part of New Zealand. This is a community to which people are drawn for its climate, coastal scenery and sailing opportunities; it has a well-deserved reputation for eccentricity.
