After separating from the U.S. Air Force in the early 1970s, Steven joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and was able to see much of the world through the eyes of a seaman. Later in life, he began a career in the science field but discovered that life working in the same location day after day was not to his taste. Still yearning to travel, he switched careers again and began working for the U.S. Government overseas.
