Karen Mathews was born in Stockton, CA. Her parents, Avis and Harlin, farmed a few acres in San Joaquin County and her father built homes as a contractor. Karen, a product of public education, is the middle child of three. Her interest in public service was inspired by her father's service during World War II, helping to liberate the Nazi death camps.
