Carmen Martin Gaite is one of the most honored writers of contemporary Spain and the only author who has won Spain's National Prize for Literature twice. Her best-known novel is the fantastic memoir El cuarto de atras (The Back Room). She earned a doctorate in language and literature from the University of Madrid and has published award-winning nonfiction. She has also authored stories, poems, plays, screenplays, and mini-dramas for learning Spanish, which she named conversaciones creadoras.
