Carlos Machado trained as a cardiologist in Brazil. Thanks to a family member who, without his knowledge, put him forward in the competition to find Frank Netter's successor, he was chosen by Novartis (formerly Ciba Geigy) in 1993 to be the illustrator to keep the Netter tradition alive; he moved to Texas, and has worked in Austin, solely as a medical illustrator for the Netter collection for the last 13 years. In addition to creating original paintings in the Netter style, he also meticulously updates many of Netter's plates when necessary.
