Iris Heerdegen was born in Rudolstadt/Thuringen in 1960. She grew up in the small village of Meura and spent most of her childhood and adolescence there. Reading was always one of her favourite pastimes and she spent a lot of time in the local library. She was especially interested in classical adventure stories - in the works of writers like Jules Verne, Joseph Conrad, Rudyard Kipling, Alexandre Dumas and Robert Louis Stevenson.
