Maccunn, John

Diogenes Laertius (fl. c. 3rd century CE) was a biographer of the Greek philosophers. Nothing is known about his life, but his surviving "Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers" is a principal source for the history of Greek philosophy.

Publius Syrus (fl. 46-29 BC), was a Latin writer of sententiae. He was a Syrian who was brought as a slave to Italy, but by his wit and talent he won the favour of his master, who freed and educated him.

Xenophon (c. 430 - 354 BC), also known as Xenophon of Athens, was a Greek historian, soldier, mercenary, and student of Socrates.
