Clarence E. Macartney (1879-1957) was born in Northwood, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and Princeton Theological Seminary. He served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1924. His pastoral ministries included the influential First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, from 1927-1953. Macartney was also a frequent conference, college, and seminary lecturer.
