Paul was born in Hampstead, London, and studied at Cardiff University. He travelled overland across Asia, in the mid-1970s, arriving in Darwin, Australia, just in time for Cyclone Tracy which destroyed the city. After a year working as a medical rep in Dunedin, New Zealand, he worked his passage across the Pacific to Panama, and spent a year hitch-hiking around South America. On returning to London, he became involved in alternative theatre, before settling on a career in journalism.
