At age 26, Levy was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature, serving fifteen years, rising to the Chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee and Deputy Presiding Officer. Thereafter, he served as a New York State assemblyman. In 2003, Levy was elected as Suffolk County executive and proceeded to rescue the county from a $238 million shortfall.
