I come from a seafaring background and, for as many generations back as can be traced, my ancestors, on both sides, were seamen and shipowners. My ancestral home is a tiny island in the Mediterranean, but I have never lived there. I spent the first six years of my life on a working cargo ship with three generations of my family and have lived in the UK from the age of twelve.
