Leavitt received his Ph.D. in Psychopharmacology from the University of Michigan in 1968, then took a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley. Since 1970 he has taught at Calfornia State University in Hayward. He has been a visiting lecturer at colleges in Nairobi, Kenya; Vancouver, Canada; Palmerston North New Zealand; and Bushey, England.
