Elizabeth Robertson Laytin, a graduate of Brown University, is a freelance journalist living in East Hampton, N.Y. with her husband, 17-year-old daughter and golden retriever. She writes for the Brown Alumni Magazine, East Hampton Press and online newspapers, and has published several short stories about teenagers and growing up. This novel is drawn from her experiences riding horses in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and working as a waitress in Newport, R.I. in 1974 at the age of 19.
