Thomas Lawson has shown paintings at MetroPictures, New York and the Richard Kuhlenschmidt and Rosamund Felsen galleries in Los Angeles, as well as in many public institutions around the world. His essays have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, frieze and October. He has organized exhibitions for such venues as Artists Space, P.S. 1 and White Columns in New York, and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Since 1991, he has been Dean of Cal Arts. Since 2002, he has been Co-Editor of the influential journal, Afterall, and his selected writings were recently published by JRP/Ringier.
