Tom Lane launched his banking career in the U.S. Virgin Islands with Chase Manhattan. Chase later dispatched Lane to New York City, London and Italy. Fringe benefits included; Diving, sailing the Caribbean, Alpine skiing and Italian wine. In his 30's, Lane returned to the Midwest, joining Old Kent Bank. Lane 1984 Wall Street Journal editorial argued that record high interest rates had prodded US lenders to become more efficient. Many S&L's didn't get it.
