Naoshi Koriyama was born in 1926 on an island named "Kikajima" in the Amami chain of islands between mainland Japan and Okinawa. He graduated from Kagoshima Normal College in 1947 and from Okinawa Foreign Language Schoolin 1949. He studied at the University of New Mexico 1950-51 and the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, 1951-54 (B.A.). While in Albany, he started writing poetry in English, rather than Japanese.
