When I began to write about Fitzwilly in 1993, it was a period of great stress in my personal life, a period of change --- job, children growing up, and so forth. It seemed as if he grew out of thin air and simply "became" as I accessed a state of my being from which I could watch him --- like in a movie. My fingers simply flew over the keys as I described what I saw him doing, feeling, and saying.
