Tina Koenig is not a British citizen but is of English descent on her mother's side. Some of the inspiration for the book's characters came from her own family history. According to genealogical research, Samuel Jennings (her mother's great, great grandfather), was Assistant Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society. He was awarded many medals for plants and edited the "Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society" (Volume V) published in 1879.
