Mary Torre Kelly grew up in South Florida at the dawn of the Cuban Revolution. She studied literature and art at Florida State University and earned a BFA degree from the Atlanta College of Art. She attended the Iowa Summer Writing Workshop in 1989, and, in 1990, won a tuition grant to Emory University Writer' Institute for her unpublished novel Guava Dreams. In 1997, she attended the New York State Writers' Institute at Skidmore to workshop another unpublished novel titled The Televisionary.
