Josefina Fontanals Marti was born and brought up in Barcelona, where she studied languages and literature. However, because of a special interest in social psychiatry, in 1958 she decided to go to New York City, where she enrolled in Columbia University and received her degree in that field. She stayed in New York for seven years, doing social work in Spanish Harlem.
