Julius Jortner was born in 1936 in Romania near the border with Poland. His parents were Polish nationals with a business in Romania. They contrived to leave in late 1940, heading south out of Europe to escape the war and the Holocaust, eventually finding refuge in Bombay, India. In 1946, after the World War II ended, they came to the USA, where Jortner has lived since, first in New York City, then in Los Angeles, and now, for the last 20 years or so, in Pacific City, Oregon.
