Anne James was born on a farm in Illinois. During college she discovered an interest in horticulture while working for plant nurseries. After an independent study in England with an agricultural school she opened Anne's Perennials. Upon marrying, she and her husband lived in the Lowcountry areas of Georgia and South Carolina where they raised three children. Moving back to the family farm in Illinois, James earned a Master Gardener status through the University of Illinois Extension Service.
