Hugh grew up on a small far in north central Alberta. He was astory teller from a very young age when his siblings pleaded with him to tell them a story. he was doing a man's work by age 13 and knew how to operate every piece fo farm achinery as well as look after livestock. He joined the Army in 1943 and seved as an infantryman in the front lines with the Algonquin Regiment in Belgium and holland. On his return to Canada he worked at Vancouver Airport where he took his flying lessons and graduated as a novice pilot.
