Karen Hopkins grew up in Martinez, California before moving to Chile at 17. After completing a university degree she worked for Pan American Airlines, based in London, England, traveling in Europe, the Middle East, India, and South America. Having contracted wanderlust, she traveled with her husband, teaching in Panama, working at the "most remote school in the United States" in Ticaboo, Utah, at a private college in Salt Lake City, on the Navajo Reservation, in Hermosillo, Mexico, and at an inner city high school in Arizona.
