George Hook was born in Chicago. His education includes Junior Hall, Budlong Elementary School, and Junior Military Academy in Chicago, the Missouri Military Academy, in Mexico, Missouri, Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he majored in English Composition and Political Science, the University of Chicago Law School, the Armor Officer School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and the Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
