Janice was born in post-war south-east London, but went to school in Hampshire and as the step-daughter of a soldier, in West Germany. Following "A" levels, she worked with thoroughbred racehorses in the UK, France and the USA. Janice returned to college in her early twenties, gaining a Batchelor's Degree in Education from King Alfred's College, Winchester, which she later followed with a Master's Degree in Education.
