Jim Hoey was born and raised in Taconite, Minnesota, and graduated from Greenway High School in Coleraine and St. Mary's University in Winona. He spent 34 years as a secondary social studies teacher and was a hockey and softball coach at both Shakopee and Farmington High Schools. His passion for Vikings football began in 1961, when, as a nine-year old, he watched the fledgling new franchise on a grainy black and white Setchell-Carlson television.
