A native of Oregon, Lawrence Hobart attended the University of Oregon, and worked as reporter for the Oregon Statesman, a daily newspaper in the state capital in Salem. His cousin Patricia Brandt--a librarian, researcher, and author--brought to his attention the active role of the Ku Klux Klan in Oregon in the early 20th century and specifically the minutes of a La Grande, Oregon, KKK klavern.
