Anthony Hirst studied Theology and English at Cambridge in the 1960s. After a non-a emic career, he returned to university, receiving an MA in Byzantine Studies (1994) and a PhD in Modern Greek (1999) from King's College London, He has held research fellowships at Princeton University and Queen's University Belfast, where he is now Assistant Director of the Institute of Byzantine Studies and Head of Modern Greek. His current research concerns the poetry of C. R Cavafy.
