Philip Herzig was born on December 31, 1924, in a New York City hospital, amid the clatter of New Year celebrations on 42nd Street. Life settled down at the family home in Douglaston, where he lived until four years old. With no schools in Douglaston, the family, now including a little sister Patricia, moved to Great Neck, L.I., where his schooling was assured.
