Joan Barstow Hernandez was born and grew up in the United States. She became a Baha'i during college and immediately after graduating went pioneering, serving for nineteen years in Guatemala before moving to Bolivia in 1990, where she began her work with Nur University. She has authored or co-authored more than twenty books in Spanish, and a lesser number in English, related to education, family relations, leadership, social-economic development, and the Baha'i Faith.
