Dan Helmer is a native of New Jersey and is a 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. At West Point, in addition to being a letter man in gymnastics, he earned degrees in Military History and Arabic. His senior thesis on Hezbollah's employment of suicide bombing later earned the 2005 William E. Depuy award for military writing from Military Review.
