I was born in Munich, Germany, studied sociology and communication at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, receiving the degree of Dr. phil in 1951. After working as editor of feature films, I joined the newly founded ZDF (German Television Channel 2), and served, after a short period in Washington D.C., in the dramatic years of Allende, Pinochet and the Argentine coup detat as foreign correspondent for Latin America, with office in Rio de Janeiro.
