Phil was born into a Brooklyn Italian family where he was a shy and withdrawn child. He was a Timid Catholic who never seemed to be able to fit in with other boys his age. At seventeen, he enlisted in the US Army after quitting school. He continued with seven years of architectural studies after his military career before finally starting work as a professional architect.
